Fred Murray Dean (1916-2002) was born in East St. Louis, Illinois, and attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. He graduated in 1938 and received his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Infantry. He completed primary and advanced flight schools at Randolph and Kelly Fields, Texas.
